A Decade in Christmas Music

Mycalea Lewis

Happy December! The holiday season is in full swing in the NCDS community, and there’s so much to look forward to: Advent Angels, Semi, Vespers and the Christmas Celebration before break. And even more exciting than that, it’s almost the start of a new decade! I think it’s fair to say that the 2010s was a pretty interesting time to say the least, but I hope that you all are excited for new beginnings in the new year.

If there’s one thing that brings people together in any decade, it’s music. So, here is a list of 9 Christmas songs from the 2010s by some of our favorite artists, along with 5 new favorites from Christmas 2019! Enjoy!

2010: “Oh Santa!” by Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey, the declared “Queen of Christmas” has another Xmas classic about wanting to be with your significant other on Christmas, just in case you’re tired of hearing “All I Want for Christmas is You”.

2011: “Mistletoe” by Justin Bieber

A song that needs no introduction. By the way, let’s be honest, we all wanted to be the girl in this music video.

2012: “It’s Christmas Time Again” by The Backstreet Boys

A highly underrated Christmas song from one of our favorite 90s boy bands. Add this your playlist, you won’t regret it.

2013: “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande has been a staple in the 2010s, each song and album seemingly better than the last. Her Christmas songs are no different as she sings about love during the holidays.

2014: “Mary, Did You Know?” by Pentatonix

A beautiful tribute to Mother Mary and Jesus’ birth from the best acapella group in the game. Sorry, Barden Bellas.

2015: “My Only Wish” by Britney Spears

Although this song was recorded in 2000, it was released 15 years later and it’s still one of our favorites. We hope you got your wish, Britney!

2016: “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” by Pentatonix

Not many can celebrate the birth of Jesus through song better than Pentatonix, as heard in this incredible cover.

2017: “Candy Cane Lane” by Sia

Sia has a way of making us feel so many emotions in her songs, and for me, it’s mostly happiness. This song captures holiday cheer the way only Sia can.

2018: “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by John Legend ft. Esperanza Spaulding

If you like more soulful Christmas music, then you can’t go wrong with John Legend. The harmonies of his and contemporary jazz artist Esperanza Spalding’s voices are sure to give you that warm feeling inside.

2019:

And to close out this calendar year, here’s 5 more Christmas songs from 2019!

“Like It’s Christmas” by the Jonas Brothers

If there’s one thing that I will never forget about 2019, it would probably be the Jonas Brothers getting back together. Now, they’re ringing out the year (and decade) with a new Christmas song and hopefully some more gems in 2020.

“Christmas Tree Farm” by Taylor Swift

Celebrate T. Swift’s birthday month with this adorable song about how Christmas tree farms made Taylor’s childhood so magical.

“Love You More at Christmastime” by Kelly Rowland

For all those Destiny’s Child fans out there, Kelly Rowland is here with a new Christmas song about how your loved ones can make the holidays so much better.

“Make It to Christmas” by Alessia Cara

Alessia’s latest single since her last album is all about trying to get through all the hard times and make it to the best time of the year. We’re all right there with you, girl.

“Cozy Little Christmas” by Katy Perry

There’s no way we could close out the 2010s without talking about Katy Perry. She defined most of our childhoods, and now she’s ringing out her decade with a new Christmas hit.

I hope this playlist made you smile and you were reminded of some holiday favorites and even found some new ones! Here’s to the 2020s bringing more Christmas magic. Happy holidays!!
